    yes the 1st one takes 7 bytes for "1"..
    second one takes 4 bytes (val "1") and
    last one (sgn pi) takes only 2 bytes.

    Handy thread, this. So...

    0 = NOT PI
    1 = SGN PI
    2 = VAL "2"
    3 = INT PI

    Is there a better one for 2?
    What about 4?

    The only logical use I have ever seen for VAL$ was in a recursive function to print
    n! where the result would be an empty string when n reached 0.

    I once saw a program where someone recalculated a binary string from INPUT to a decimal number since BIN A$ didn't work.
    Just use VAL ("BIN " + A$") next time.

    There are subtle situations where the listing in YS was better though. If you wanted the user to type in a formula then VAL doesn't work to well unless you can persuade them to use e.g. BIN rather than typing B-I-N.
