    It's more than likely that the EHT is on it's way out, this unit provides the high voltage to the tube, the symptons you explain are common prior to the pin cushion effect taking place, followed by a slight short hiss and then a blank screen.

    You shouldnt have any problems making the video cable. For the power supply, you'll need a 9v @ 1A (or close to that) adapter. The voltage can vary upto about 13v and it will be fine.

    Cheers for that. I'm a little surprised the 7805 wasn't more frequent as my own Speccy blew two up.....I wonder if there was some other problem like too high a voltage from the transformer...(?)

    If not the ULA, it's most likely to be RAM/Z80. You's be surprised at how often the Z80 goes down.

    You can do basic voltage checks to see if all the voltages are present, that may be a start....
