While rumaging through a box of tapes, it appears I also have the original Cassette version !!!. So I'll see about a TZX/WAV tonight and also test the +3 version to see what they do.

Discontinued now I'm afraid so eBay is probably the only option. Check out the newer iRiver players I think they all have wav support (and some mpeg4) but there's no optical input/output and a nasty plastic casing.
