My laptop is a 486/DX2 50MHz and there's no option to change the CPU out so I'm grateful that X128 still exists, and any optimisations will be very welcome indeed!

You can try some other emulator:
SpecEmu can slow down CPU at 1.75Mhz
X128 and EmuZWin can slow down emulation from 25% to 70% of Spectrum actual speed. -

There is also Amiga port of X128, released about 1999. It's very slow, so an update could be nice :)
