That's right. Usually the compiler (gcc) and the c libraries are installed by default. The latest version of SuSE that I installed didn't for some reason, which surprised me since they're such an integral and essential part of the OS.

The compiler and libraries were on the dvd. They just weren't included in the basic installation. I had to manually install them afterwards.
