A METHOD OF ESCAPE

"ALERT! WORKER THX2240, PLEASE REPORT TO YOUR POST IMMEDIATELY. FAILURE TO

ATTEND TO YOUR ROUTINE CROP SPRYING DUTIES WILL RESULT IN UNCONDITIONAL

TERMINATION".

For soya plantation worker THX2240 this was the last straw. Life in the

state controlled agricultural bloc seemed like virtual imprisonment.

Breaking into the armoury and stealing a one person mobile Crowd control

Vehicle (CCV), she decided to make her bid for freedom.

In the agricultural bloc, giant solar conductors are used to provide

artificial sunlight for the crops during spells of bad weather. The solar

beams are 'bounced' to their destination points by directable glass

reflector stations. Obviously, if a beam were to be fired in the wrong

direction, the results could be lethal.

The agricultural bloc is split into separately enclosed compounds, each of

them joined by sealed exit tunnels. Using the CCV, THX2240 will be able to

turn the reflector stations so that they guide the solar beam into the exit

tunnels, shattering their seals! In this way, there is just a slim chance

that she could escape to freedom through the exit tunnel of the outermost

compound and join the rebles and outcasts living outside the control of the

state.

THE SNAG

All the compounds are heavily patrolled by police surveillance machines.

Contact with any of these will mean immediate termination. The CCV (which

resembles a small tank) is highly manoeuvrable and well armoured, so

THX2240 will not be totally wothout protection.

UNFORTUNATELY, ESCAPE CHANCES HAVE BEEN ESTIMATED AT 574 TO 1.

The Object of the Game

you must collect reflectors on each level while defending yourself from

attack. Once you have explored the level you are on and found the sealed

exit, you must strategically place and position the reflectors between the

Solar Beam Generator and the exit. turn the solar beam on to blast your

way through the exit to the next level. There are 10 levels to penetrate

before you can finally escape and meet up with the resistance.

Hints and Tips

Avoid Patrol Squads at all costs. All surveillance machines patrol set

routes, so with practice you will learn the safest paths. Good luck!

11.7.2081:

Dear Diary on a disc:

This will be my last entry in your files. I'm going to make an escape

attempt tomorrow. I've been given the access codes to the armoury by a

sympathetic friend in Weapons Research - he's due for termination shortly

on account of his age (he's nearly 30).

I just can't go on. The new plantation supervisor has been making life

hell, as usual. We're all being re-conditioned to improve our soya

production output. I keep thinking back to the day DAN2711 made a break for

it.

"See you on the other side", he said. Now I know what he meant and why he

would even risk his life to get away. No one knows if he made it. But I've

got to try and get out of here, to find him and the others who have gone.

I'm so scared the surveillance police are on me. They searched my living

unit two days ago. I know it's only routine, but I'm sure they suspect me.

I've already been cautioned for not taking my tranq-u-pills. The thing is,

that now I've been off them for a while, I realise just how much they sap

my will to resist. At least I can think for myself now. even last night I

felt so strange, so alive. I sat on the edge of the bed gasping for breath

with water running from my eyes. i was shaking all over. i think it's a

condition called crying or cringing or something like that. We have pills

to stop it happening but I've stopped taking those as well. I've planned an

escape route for tomorrow, though even using the quickest paths I'll have

to break my way through all the sealed compounds. Some of these contain

massive reservoirs, crossed by narrow strips of land, which could prove

difficult for the CCV to manoeuvre on, even if I can get through the

inevitable police surveillance machines. Perhaps it won't matter what

happens. I'd rather face termination than stay here, a prisoner and slave.

I've already suffered for half the standard lifespan and things get even

worse as you get older, with doubled workloads and abolition of leisure

time for the over twenties. As it is, I'm almost sixteen.

Better close this file now, only a minute or two to go before controlled

sleep mode is activated. If they find me out of my sleeping capsule, my

escape attempt will be foiled before it has begun...

Reflectors

Each level has a limited supply of solar reflectors that are placed in

reflector stations. A reflector can be rotated within a station, or removed

and transported to another station. Drive your tank under the station and

use FIRE will turn it to reflect in a different direction, pick it up or

drop it.
